Transgender Bathroom Bill Clears Ohio Legislature, Heads to Governor

On November 13, 2024, the Ohio Senate passed a controversial bill that prohibits transgender students from using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity. The bill, which applies to both K-12 public schools and higher education institutions, mandates separate bathrooms and locker rooms for males and females based on their gender assigned at birth.

The bill has sparked strong opposition from the ACLU of Ohio, which argues it could create unsafe environments for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. Supporters, including the Center for Christian Virtue, say it is necessary for the safety and privacy of children. Governor Mike DeWine has indicated he is inclined to sign the bill but will first conduct a legal review.

Ohio would join at least 11 other states with similar laws if the measure is signed into law.
