Diddy’s Lawyers Ask for Him to Appear Unshackled in Court to Avoid ‘Juror Bias’

Sean "Diddy" Combs’ legal team has filed a request for the music mogul to be unshackled during all future court appearances, including an upcoming hearing scheduled for Tuesday, November 19. In a letter to Judge Arun Subramanian, Diddy’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, argued that the restraints, particularly leg shackles, would prejudice the jury pool and undermine his client’s presumption of innocence.

The letter, obtained by Us Weekly, points to an October 10 court appearance where Diddy was seen shackled, which attracted public attention and could potentially influence jurors. Agnifilo stated that shackling interferes with Diddy’s ability to communicate with his counsel and offends the dignity of the proceedings.

Diddy, 55, faces charges related to sex trafficking, racketeering, conspiracy, and transportation for prostitution after his September arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial is scheduled to begin in May 2025. Diddy is currently detained at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, having been denied bail three times. His legal team recently proposed a new $50 million bail package, which includes home detention with 24/7 security and restrictions on outside contact, except through his legal team.

The prosecution has opposed the bail request, claiming that Diddy attempted to obstruct the investigation while incarcerated, including orchestrating social media campaigns aimed at influencing the jury pool and contacting witnesses through third parties. Prosecutors allege that Diddy paid fellow inmates to use their phone accounts to make hundreds of calls and texts, which violated jail rules.

In response, Diddy’s lawyers have accused the prosecution of violating his rights by conducting an unauthorized search of his jail cell. They contend that the search resulted in the seizure of attorney-client privileged material, including Diddy’s own written notes. Agnifilo has requested an evidentiary hearing to investigate the search and determine who authorized it.
