Cher Says Gregg Allman Broke Up with Her in a Note Because He Felt 'a Fool' When She Reunited with Ex Sonny Bono for Work

Cher has opened up about her tumultuous marriage to Gregg Allman, revealing in her new memoir, Cher: The Memoir, Part 1, that the musician once ended their relationship with a note. The 78-year-old star recalled how their marriage, which lasted from 1975 to 1979, became strained when Allman felt threatened by her renewed professional partnership with ex-husband Sonny Bono.

Before their show The Sonny & Cher Show was set to air in 1976, Cher discovered she was pregnant, but when she told Allman, he didn't believe her. He refused to meet with her when he returned to Los Angeles, upset by the tabloid speculation about a love triangle involving Cher, Bono, and himself.

According to Cher, she eventually found a note from Allman that read, “I have two choices — go back to Macon and be heartbroken and lonely, or stay here and be made a fool of, the latter of which I just can’t do because I’m a man, and a damn good one.” The note ended with him expressing regret that he couldn't "live with being a fool."

Cher and Allman had married in 1975, shortly after her divorce from Bono was finalized. However, their union faced numerous challenges, including Allman’s substance abuse issues, which Cher has described as detrimental to their relationship. Despite their struggles, they reconciled after initially separating and remained together until 1979.

In her memoir, Cher reflects on the complexities of her relationships, including her marriage to Allman and her partnership with Bono. She also explores her rise to fame, her personal struggles, and her transformation into an iconic superstar.

Cher's memoir is divided into two parts, with the first installment covering her childhood, her rise to fame, and the challenges she faced with her marriages, offering readers an honest and humorous look at her extraordinary life.
